Search Engine Optimization

What is Search Engine Optimization or SEO?

If you are not so familiar with the techie world, the term “Search Engine Optimization” would take some time for you to understand  fully. In a general and easier to understand sense, the term refers to the process of enhancing the “visibility” of a website in search engines. You see, when you try to search for things in Google or Yahoo! and hit the “Search” button, the most successful web pages which are more search engine optimized are listed at the top of the search results list.

A company’s efficient online marketing strategy would bring in a high rate of traffic to their website. One way to effectively increase the traffic to a website is to apply Search Engine Optimization on their web pages. The higher and the more frequent their website appears  in the search results page of search engines, the more online users will choose to visit their site and thus add to their pages’ traffic. A steady or increasing flow of traffic is good and healthy for the company’s site.

It is therefore important that a website employs good SEO techniques that include a consideration of what people commonly search for and how search engines work. This tactic involves frequently updating the website’s content with related keywords as well as editing its HTML code. Keywords can be added to the site’s HTML code and also, lines that may hinder indexing activities of search engines must be checked and removed. As early as the web development planning stage, SEO concept and tactics must be considered to incorporate it in the design. This way it is easier to effectively include SEO in the HTML source code of the website. Websites that are optimized for that much-needed exposure in search engines are considered as “search engine friendly”.

How do search engines work to find the sites you are searching for? Basing on the keywords you entered in the search box, the search engines use crawlers which have an algorithm that searches all over the web for site addresses with content related to the keywords you are searching for. Guidelines are being set by search engines to help with website optimization.
